Pennsylvania Sedge, Carex pensylvanica
Height: 8-10 inches
This grass-like groundcover is one of the most versatile natives around. Typically found in shady or dappled woodlands, it’s often planted as a lawn substituted in shady areas. Planted in masses, it will slowly spread to form a dense carpet of wavy hair-like foliage.
But another great way to use this plant is as living mulch. If you underplant your shrubs and trees with this sedge, you’ll have a much more ecologically friendly way to keep weeds at bay (dozens of species of caterpillars make their home in this sedge). And a carpet of sedge looks a heck of a lot better than any bagged mulch you can find.
