Short-toothed Mountain Mint, Pycnanthemum muticum
Garden Club of America’s 2018 Plant of the Year
Height: 2-3 feet
This tray of landscape plugs is pretty much the most bang for your buck you can get if your goal is to support wildlife. The distinctive pinkish green flowers are long bloomers and pollinator magnets. Better still, mountain mint plant attracts predatory insects (including lacewings, ladybugs, non-stinging parisitoid wasps and more) that will help eradicate garden pests.
It’s silvery foliage looks best planted in masses, or it can be used as a matrix in which to feature other wildflowers. It loves full sun but will grow well in partial shade. And it’s drought-tolerant but can handle moist soils as well. It does spread, but not overly aggressively, though you’ll probably be happy to have even more of this fantastic and fragrant plant.
Plugs are about 2 inches across with roots extending 5 inches deep. They’re an economical way to add a lot of plants at once. A tray of 25 plugs will cover about 30-35 square feet.
Just one left! They will be available for in-person pickup between 9 am and 5 pm on Saturday, May 12th (Mother’s Day Weekend) in Collingswood, NJ (pickup location TBA).
