NJ Audubon’s S.A.V.E. program is an amazing example of a partnership that brings farmers and habitat restoration enthusiasts together to reach common goals.
The purchase of S.A.V.E. Birdseed? supports local farmers, ground-nesting bird habitat restoration, and some really amazing research on and experimentation with biochar. Participating farmers plan 2 acre of grassland habitat for rare nesting birds for every 5 acres of sunflowers, and all of the farms are small and family-owned.
Here’s what NJ Audubon has to say about the program:
“Most black-oil sunflower seed is produced in the Upper Midwest and must be trucked over 1500 miles to New Jersey shelves. It offers the consumer no connection to the land, and no knowledge of its origin – where it came from, who grew it, or how it got onto the shelf. S.A.V.E.? birdseed is different. Our farmers operate small, family farms and live in our communities. S.A.V.E.? birdseed tells a story about real farmers, conservation, and, of course, birds!”
Also, birds love it. They go through our S.A.V.E. sunflower seed faster than the “premium” seed we’ve bought at other stores.
